Material: Rendered strawbale

Built: 2007

Location: Cape Otway

The Otway Ranges is know as much for its inclement weather as it is for its stunning natural landscapes. This strawbale home needed to have as much protection to the walls as possible while still allowing the maximum amount of winter sun to penetrate the windows.

3D computer modelling was used to determine a site locationt that would require minimal site excavation while still taking advantage of the best access to views and sun.

The open plan living, dining, kitchen area straddles the width of the house so that views can be enjoyed to the south while the sun can enter from the north. A mudbrick wall seperates the living from the sleeping zone and a vaulted ceiling lined with timber boards encloses a dramatic volume. The sunspace entry serves the dual function of formal air-locked entry and as a practical place to come in out of the weather to take the muddy boots off before entering the house.
